Sewing For Pleasure Show

As planned, I went on a coach trip to the Sewing For Pleasure Show at the NEC yesterday. It was a bit of an effort as I was still tired from Thursday but I'm glad I went. I decided to concentrate on the displays to start with as I often miss things going round the sales pitches.

~

First port of call was the Quilters Guild "Out of the Shadows Into the Light" display which showed the winners and others from a competition in conjunction with Makower fabrics. I have to admit to being a bit surprised at the extent of the exhibit as I had been expecting something larger. I have to apologise to any of the exhibitors who mightlook in here if the colours in my photos are not true. The light was doing all sorts of weird things to my camera!

This wonderful portrait below is the overall winner in the Stitch/Madeira Threads Embroidery Competition 2008. The theme for the competition was "Glimpses of China" and there were some amazing pieces, not least this handsome gentleman. Unfortuantely it was framed behind glass and the reflections were horrendous. I hope that clicking on the photo to enlarge it will show you some of the detail and the yarns used in the shirt.

Thanks for sharing, Julie - I wasn't able to come. I agree on the scale of the guild exhibit, very small.

I was able to dobble click on the winner and see a bigger picture (and see her name), but it would have been nice to see her credited in your post as well....... Just a thought :O)

A link would be even better ;O)

Relieves to hear that labrynthitis might not last as long as I feared!!

Gorgeous pieces of work. That portrait is amazing!!!

I have noticed losts of adverts for craft fairs lately, coming up over the next few months. None seem to be in the East :( though today I spotted that there will be one in TOnbridge in May so maybe I can combine it with a trip to my mum's...

I agree about the light. I was there for the final of the sewing world competetion and looked at the exhibits which were wonderful under awful light. didn't buy too many things for once although I nearly cracked on the tweed stand. deep breaths keep walking.
Had a great time I agree with all you said. The Mrs Henderson exhibit was disapointing small tho' wasn't it.

Hi Claire. Thank you for your comments. Somehow I didn't get to the tweed stand although I did see it a couple of times and kept meaning to have a look :o( I suppose space is always at a premium at these events, it's just a bit disappointing when your particular interest only has a small area to display in. Overall though it was a great show.

This looks like the show I went to in Harrogate in October which used to be the 'Madeira' show an dis now called 'Fashion embroidery and stitch'and has now been moved to spring not autumn, so I wonder if its the same? I saw all these things there.

Hi Julie, thanks for showing these great photos of such amazing work. The colours look good to me and so much detailed work in these pieces. I bet it was really fab to see these pieces close up

I saw the Madeira competition at Stitches (trade show) and I thought the winning portrait was fabulous, but you are so right, it is really hard to photograph things behind glass.
Thanks for popping by my blog, your comments are very kind.

ps. Julie, I would love to see your grids when you are finished. Yes, I've got both of Sandra Meech's books as well, they are great, and I've worked through some of the exercises, but I would love to work through the whole lot in one project. Just need to finish all my UFO's first ...

Yes me too, I'm itching to start Sandra Meech projects but I'm going to try and be good as long as I can. I'm trying to finish off stuff already started and blog my college textiles first, probably all this year. I also have a sketchbook challenge to get done by January 2010, so think I will start SM in Jan 2010. If you don't get to it this year, maybe we could go through it together. If you do start this year, I shall watch with great enthusiasm!!!!
